What Are Plaque Disclosing Tablets?
Plaque disclosing tablets are chewable tablets containing a dye that attaches to dental plaque. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that continually forms on the teeth. Because plaque is often pale or colourless, it can be difficult to see without a disclosing product.
Some tablets use one colour to identify plaque, while two-tone products distinguish newer plaque from plaque that has been present longer. The colour does not cause plaque or make it worse. It simply reveals where buildup remains.
What Do the Coloured Areas Mean?
Stained areas show where plaque was not fully removed during brushing and flossing. A few small patches may point to specific places you regularly miss, while widespread colour may mean your overall technique needs improvement.
Plaque commonly remains:
- Along the gumline
- Between crowded or overlapping teeth
- Around braces, retainers or other dental appliances
- Behind the lower front teeth
- On the back surfaces of molars
- Around crowns, bridges and dental implants
Rather than simply scrubbing harder, focus on reaching each surface carefully. A soft-bristled toothbrush angled toward the gumline can help, while floss or an interdental brush should be used between teeth.
Using Plaque Disclosing Tablets Step-by-Step
Plaque disclosing tablets are simple to use at home. Instructions can vary slightly between products, so always read the packaging before getting started.
- Brush and floss your teeth. Use the tablet after your usual oral hygiene routine to reveal any plaque you missed.
- Chew the tablet thoroughly. Move it around your mouth with your tongue so the dye reaches the front, back and chewing surfaces of every tooth. Do not swallow the tablet.
- Spit out the excess dye. Gently rinse your mouth with water according to the product instructions.
- Look closely at your teeth. Pay particular attention to the gumline, back teeth and spaces between teeth.
- Brush the stained areas again. Continue brushing and cleaning between your teeth until the coloured plaque has been removed.
The dye may temporarily colour your tongue, lips or gums. It can also stain clothing and some bathroom surfaces, so use the tablets carefully and rinse the sink immediately afterward.
When Should You Use Plaque Disclosing Tablets?
Plaque disclosing tablets can be used occasionally to check your brushing technique. Many people find that using them once a week provides a helpful reminder without making them part of every brushing session.
They may be especially useful for children learning to brush, people with braces and anyone trying to improve their oral hygiene.
